TCR in India (www.tcreng.com) has started performing Acoustic Pulse Reflectometry (APR) as a rapid inspection technique for heat exchanger tubing. This is a very fast technique that is designed specifically for detecting faults commonly found in industrial tube systems: leaks, increases in internal diameter caused by wall loss, and full or partial blockages. The handheld probe employs extremely short source tubes (approximately 20 cm), making it extremely portable and convenient. It takes just 10 seconds to inspect one tube with APR.

What is APR?
Acoustic Pulse Reflectometry (APR) is based on the measurement of one-dimensional acoustic waves propagating in tubes. Any change in the cross sectional area in the tubular system creates a reflection, which is then recorded and analyzed in order to detect defects.

How Does APR Work?
An acoustic pulse injected into a semi-infinite straight-walled tube will propagate down the tube without generating any reflections. This pulse can be measured by mounting a small microphone with its front surface flush with the internal tube wall, through a hole in this wall. The microphone will measure the pulse once only, as it passes over the microphone diaphragm.

If however, the pulse encounters a discontinuity in cross section, a reflection is created. The amplitude and form of the reflection is determined by the characteristics of the discontinuity: a constriction will create a positive reflection, whereas a dilation (increase in cross section) will create a negative reflection. Neither of these discontinuities will change the shape of the pulse in their vicinity, but the reflection measured by the microphone will be an attenuated and smeared replica of the impinging pulse, due to propagation losses. A hole in the tube wall, on the other hand, will create a reflection having a more complicated shape, affected by the size of the hole and the radiation of acoustic energy to the space outside the tube.

Best practice risk-based inspection implementation

RBI guru Ron Selva, Director of TCR PP SIMTECH Solutions, reveals what is RBI best practice and how to implement it successfully.

Risk-based inspection implementation (RBI) is still a developing technology. What are the decisive factors to consider for best practice RBI implementation?

Ron Selva. RBI implementation is a highly critical process, as it effectively manages through the assigned responsibilities of plant inspection, operations and process engineers the asset integrity safely, reliably and at the most optimum costs throughout a plant’s lifecycle.

In order to deliver this, certain aspects must not be compromised, as these are the ‘bottom line’ for implementing RBI successfully. To begin with, RBI technology should be reliable, incorporating best practices, and be user-friendly for plant engineers. Secondly, the RBI team study needs to be thorough. There is no short cut to this task – the required study time must not be compromised. In addition to an RBI engineer and corrosion specialist, the study team must include inspection, operations and process engineers from plant. The study output needs to be reliable and comprehensive, and match plant site objectives. Finally, RBI software needs to comprehensively support the foregoing and be transparent and auditable.

For example, compromising the quality of the RBI study by not providing sufficient study time – to reduce project timescales and costs – adversely affects correct identification of active and potential damage mechanisms (DMs) applicable to an item. This has a detrimental effect on the confidence that can be placed on the RBI study output, particularly on the risk profiles of DMs and the related inspection interval. As such, the claimed outcomes in improvements in equipment reliability, safety and financial benefits are questionable, as is the management decision to buy into RBI output and implement it in the hope of achieving the claimed benefits.

Various RBI methodologies are available, including API-581. Each has merits and weaknesses. What is the current industry status on RBI technology? Is there a recommended assessment level?

RS. Companies that have implemented RBI report varying outcomes. Consequently, the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) issued additional guidance for RBI implementation to help minimise inconsistencies. The latest API-580:2009 provides guidance for key aspects to be considered for implementing RBI, using Level-1 (qualitative), Level-2 (semi-quantitative) or Level-3 (quantitative) methods. API-581:2008 provides a method of RBI implementation using a Level-3 quantitative approach.

In theory, the accuracy, the detailed nature of the assessment and confidence in the results are supposed to increase with the increased level of assessment. Unfortunately, this is not the case in this instance if API-581 methodology is used. Noting that RBI is still a developing technology, the latest API-581 quantitative method has uncertainty in some of the technology used and is not end-user-friendly due to its technical complexity. Critical uncertainties include validity of ‘generic failure frequency data’ in relation to DMs and equipment types; ‘probability of failure’ assessment method; and ‘consequence of failure’ assessment in relation to each DM and its ‘failure mode’. Additionally, not all DMs applicable to a single industry sector are properly covered in API-581 methodology.

As per API-580:2009, any of the three assessment levels is acceptable; but plant site must ensure that the RBI methodology provided by the service provider is defendable, user-friendly, detailed, documented, transparent and auditable with facility for future updates of the initial implementation. Particularly, the selected service provider must have the RBI methodology to reliably assess the ‘probability of failure’ and ‘risk profiles’ of each of the DMs applicable to an item and the implementation must be supported by a comprehensive team study method. Failure to satisfy these important aspects means the confidence in the inspection interval derived for each item is fundamentally questionable.

Wider industry experience shows that a Level-2 (semi-quantitative) RBI methodology, which satisfies criteria outlined above, plus API-580:2009 and UK HSE guide, supported by a comprehensive multi-discipline team study, proves to deliver the required output and confidence in meeting plant site goals.

Due to the fact that API is again considering revamping the API-581:2008 Quantitative RBI (Level-3 methodology), it is recommended to avoid its use until this technology is stabilised and fully approved by the wider RBI service providers and relevant industry sectors, whilst ensuring all the relevant DMs applicable, at least to the refining and petrochemical industries, are included in it. However, API-581 is useful for obtaining damage rate and other relevant information on certain DMs when using Level-2 (semi-quantitative) RBI methodology.

TCR Arabia offers Short Wave Guided Wave Ultrasonic Techniques

TCR Arabia (www.tcr-arabia.com) in conjunction with its international partners now offers Short Range Guided Wave Ultrasonic Technique (SRGUT) which has been designed to test the annular plate of above ground storage tanks (AST’s) while the tank remains in-service. The technique is based on the concept of pulsing guided laminar waves into the base material from the chime area. The waves propagate up to three feet into the annular plate. When corrosion, pitting, erosion are present the ultrasonic waves mode convert and are received by the same transducer.

The technique is also being used to test for corrosion under pipe supports, corrosion at soil air interfaces, and similar difficult to access locations.

The above figure depicts the transducer placement on the chime plate propagating long range ultrasonic waves into the annular plate. The sound reflects at top side or underside corrosion providing a c-scan image of the defect. The signal strength at the defect provides evidence of the depth and overall morphology of the defects.

The above figure provides a visual presentation of the collected data providing distance inspected, with of inspection along with details on the indications identified.

Sasol (NYSE: SSL) is a multinational gas and oil company based in South Africa that produces a wide array of chemical and liquid fuels. Sasol specializes in gas-to-liquid (GTL) and coal-to-liquid (CTL) technologies, which convert natural gas and coal to diesel and other liquid fuels, and it is the largest producer of motor fuels from coal worldwide.

The company operates the world's only commercial coal-based manufacturing facility at its Secunda (about 140km from Johannesburg) plant in South Africa. The Synfuels division produces liquid fuel, ammonia, chemical feedstock, sulfur, electricity, and steam. Sasol Secunda CTL is a synthetic fuel plant that uses coal liquefaction to produce petroleum-like synthetic crude oil from coal. It is the largest coal liquefaction plant in the world.

TCR provided QA/QC Inspection Engineers and NDT Level II qualified Radiography Technicians. The qualified personal team was led by Mr. Ravikiran Choudhari. The shutdown undertaken was one of biggest shutdown at the Sasol plant. The TCR team of QA/QC inspection engineers and RT technicians undertook various tasks such as inspection of static equipments, tanks, vessels, pipelines, columns by using Visual Examination, Welding Survey, Conventional and Advanced Non Destructive Testing and Radiography. The total duration of this shutdown was 4 weeks.

Sasol has given appreciation letters to the team members from TCR on successful completion of this project.

TCR Advanced completes Eddy Current Project for Essar in India

TCR Advanced carried out Eddy Current Testing services for Essar Power (India) ltd., Salaya project – Jamnagar. Eddy Current Testing (ECT) is an electromagnetic NDT technique widely used in Power Plants (Nuclear, Thermal, Gas Turbine), Petrochemical, Refineries and other Industries where tubular Heat Exchangers, Coolers, Condensers are provided.

The assignment at EPIL – Jamnagar was testing of condenser tubes 0.5mm and 0.7mm thick x 25mm OD x 11820mm long. MOC of the same is Titanium. The inspection was pre-service inspection and was intended to find out surface / subsurface defects on OD & ID.

The above test is not a volumetric technique. This is a surface technique and can readily detect very shallow surface defects (fatigue crack, inter-granular stress corrosion cracks etc), sub surface defects (inclusions, voids etc.) within a depth of say 6 mm. It can also identify pitting, cracking, microbiological induced corrosion damage, support wear, erosion etc. and hence is very widely used as an important tool of in-service inspection of heat exchangers.

This Non destructive testing using a multi frequency Eddy Current system would examine surface and sub-surface areas of materials with suitable electrical conductive and magnetic properties. The instrument used allows Inspection of a large variety of materials and provides documentation of the inspection all in one unit.

Features of testing machine

Ø Capable of Multi Frequency Testing.

Ø Capable of performing multi channel (4 channels) data acquisition in differential as well as absolute mode.

Ø Phase angle rotation for signal is adjustable from 0 to 360 degrees with angle increments of minimum 1 degree.

Ø Signal amplitude magnification is adjustable through gain control.

Ø The system has three automatic mixtures, which can be used real-time as well as post-acquisition for suppressing two variables simultaneously. Eg. For cancellation of tube support plate (TSP) or Baffle plate signal.

Ø Interactive display screens with several combination of strip-chart displays, vector displays and Zoomed strip-chart displays are available.

Ø Signals are automatically analyzed based on calibration curves.

Ø Sampling rate is very high which facilitates high-speed inspection of about 5 meters per second however the testing speed depends upon the sensitivity required.

Our Engineers are well trained in carrying out the test at Site and interpret the results accurately, depicting the actual condition of the tubes based on the test results, particularly very competent in resolving between defects and non-relevant indications. The job was carried out by Level II qualified engineers. Around 2000 tubes were tested in 3 days.

Heat treatment of components plays an important role in industrial equipments. It is done for various reasons the main reasons are normally to achieve the required mechanical properties and enhance metallurgical integrity of the component. Improper heat treatment done could certainly hampered the desired performance of the component. Often it leads to premature failures. It may even introduced defects that would reduce the life of component of render it unfit for further use. There are varieties of heat treatments carried out on metallic engineering components to achieve desired mechanical properties and enhance service life. Improved design and engineering practices rise in production cost have compelled industry to ought for higher production volumes to reduce the cost of heat treatment as well as rejection by way of achieving more perfection in the practices. One of the important aspects to achieve this goal is by conducting root cause metallurgical investigation for the defects observed during heat treatment. Root cause investigation approach can only be obtained with perfection by an experienced metallurgist who has basic knowledge of heat treatment and practices, Knowledge regarding field applications and with the sound background of physical metallurgy. When metal fails, it leaves behind evidences in terms of micro structural changes. The very purpose of heat treatment is to bring about desired changes in the microstructure of the component. Any abnormal conditions during heat treatment will reflect concomitant changes in terms of microstructure.

Following are the various damage mechanism that are observed due to faulty heat treatment.

1. Decarburization : depletion of carbon takes place at the surface due to highly oxidizing furnace atmosphere. Following microstructure indicates surface decarburization in medium carbon low alloy steel. In an engineering component surface decarburization is indicated by low amount of ferrite at the edges.

2. Improper distribution of second phase in microstructure: following microstructure indicates presence of un-tempered martensite ( low temperature tempered martensite) and its bands on account of the poor quality of tempering done and basic raw materials conditions.

3. Presence of harmful phases like retained austenite : presence of retained austenite especially in surface hardened components, beyond permissible levels will drastically reduce fatigue as well as wear resistance. Often it may as well lead to premature failures. Following is the microstructure of 17CrNiMo6 case carburized steel in quenched and tempered condition showing excessive amount of retained austenite.

4. Problem related to quality of quenching: Appropriate quenching based on hardenability is important to achieve the desired microstructure. Slag quenching will more often result in to undesirable high temperature transformation phases. On the other hand severe quenching will invariably result in quench cracking and failure of the component.

5. Problem arising due to improper raw material: The quality of raw material has a direct influence on the ultimate heat treatment quality. Higher level of impurities, tramp elements, and more inclusions, coarse grained structure, micro segregation faulty deoxidation and teeming practice adversely influence the heat treatment quality.

6. Cracking due to improper volume change : if the component shape is quite intricate having wide variations in section thickness it would introduce large internal stresses on account of anomalous volume changes during quenching eventually it may lead to cracking.

7. Quench cracking: improper choice of quenchant that is not based on hardenability considerations, changes in sections and mass effect invariably results in quench cracking.

8. Cracking due to low temperature melting phases: on account of micro segregation of certain impurities some intermetallic compounds having low melting point are formed They melt at the heat treatment temperature resulting in grain boundary weakening that leads to inter granular cracking. In free cutting steels having high sulfur does have this kind of problem when it is not properly balanced with manganese levels.

9. cracking in the surface case hardening : Often surface cracking results due to improper case hardening done or grinding carried out that precedes the final heat treatment.

TCR Arabia undertakes Long Range Guided Wave in Saudi Arabia

The Long Range Guided Wave Ultrasonic Technique (LRGUT) was designed to inspect 100 percent of a pipe segment from one single location.
Torsional or longitudinal guided waves are induced into the pipe body and propagated along the pipe segment being inspected. When these guided waves identify an anomaly or pipe feature, they mode convert into laminar waves and reflect back to the tools original location. Using a laptop these signals are digitally captured. The time-of-flight for each signature is calculated to determine its distance from the tool. The cross sectional area is calculated by amplitude and then the circumferential extent determined by the focused beams (broken down in octants) to determine the significance of the defect.
Its primary application is within the Oil and Gas Refining, Petrochemical, Storage, Offshore and Pipeline Transportation industries used to inspect difficult to access piping systems such as:

Rohit Bafna, director at TCR Engineering has joined Each One Teach One (EOTO) as its advisory board member. EOTO has been serving the underprivileged children of India for more than 25 years.

EOTO has spread its activities over seven schools in Mumbai and two in Bangalore. In 2003, EOTO decided to serve the more needy villages and started its activities in four villages around Mumbai. In 2008, EOTO started a mobile library to reach out to ten more villages around Palghar.

Today, more than 5000 children directly benefit from EOTO programs every year and 6000 children have passed out of the program and moved on in their professional life as welders, nurses, doctors, engineers etc.

The results achieved over the last few years gives all EOTO board members the zest to expand the services to a greater number of students across the country. Next year, we would like to launch our innovative program to reach out to more students in more cities and villages across the country.

On 19th December 2009, the team members of TCR Engineering Services in India jointly performed the Satyanarayan Puja at the office in Navi Mumbai. This joyous occasion was celebrated with our Chairman, Mr. V.K. Bafna and senior members of TCR Management.

The Satyanarayan Puja is a Hindu (Devanāgarī: हिन्दु) religious observance. It is a ritual performed by Hindus before/on any major occasion. The Satyanarayana Puja is usually done on the Purnima day of every month (the day of the full moon) or a Sankranti. It is also done on special occasions and during times of achievements as an offering of gratitude to the Lord.

The puja starts by a prayer to Lord Ganesha, to remove all obstacles that may occur as a result of incorrectly performing the puja. This is done by chanting all the names of Lord Ganesha and offering prasad (a food offering, usually consisting of one of Lord Ganesha's favorite foods - modak, a sugar and coconut mixture, or lhadu) and the showering of flower petals.

Another part of the prayer involves a prayer to the Navagraha's - the nine important celestial beings in the universe. They consist of Surya (the Sun), Chandra (the moon), Angaaraka/Chevaai (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Guru aka Bruhaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Sani (Saturn), Rahu (the head of the Demon snake), and Ketu (the tail of the Demon snake).

The rest of the puja consists of worship to Satyanarayana, an extremely benevolent form of Lord Vishnu. First "panchamritam" is used to clean the place where the deity is placed. After placing the deity in the correct position, Satyanaraya swami is worshipped. Names of Satyanarayana are chanted along with offering of a variety of prasad (including a mixture of milk, honey, ghee/butter, yogurt, sugar) and flower petals.

Another requirement of the puja is that the story of the puja be heard among all those observing and partaking in the pooja. The story involves the origin of the puja, the benefits of it, and the potential mishaps that may occur with the careless performance of the puja.

The prayer concludes with an Aarti, which consists of revolving a small fire-lit-lamp in the vicinity of an image of the Lord. After the puja is over, participants and observers of the pooja are required to ingest in the prasad that was offered and blessed by the Lord.

It is told that Satyanarayan Katha is in REVA volume of Skanda Purana. But this volume is devoted to pilgrimages on the valley of river REVA. In Satyanarayana there is no Reva river. In original Skanda Purana there is nothing like Satyanarayana. Recent Skanda Puranas added it with clear note of its new addition in Skanda.

METALLURGICAL QUALITY CONTROL FOR HEAT TREATMENT INDUSTRIES

Abstract:

Varieties of heat treatment are done on metallic engineering components to achieve desired mechanical properties and enhanced service life. Improved designs and engineering practices, rising production cost which has compelled industries to opt for high production volumes at a lower cost has propelled the heat treatment industries to reduce rejection and achieve perfection. In this present context a well organized modern in house quality control is a must for any heat treatment shop. Conventional practice of Hardness Test in vogue is often misleading as it does not reflect all the metallurgical parameters that the new design aspects demand more and more. Microstructure Examination, Magnetic Particle, ultrasonic and Dye Penetrant Testing, Mechanical Testing, micro hardness testing are gaining ground besides Dimensions and Hardness Measurements.

Microstructure can draw inferences with regard to metal cleanliness, prior austenite grain size, soaking time, effectiveness of hardening and tempering, solution annealing, precipitation hardening, etc. With radical changes in demands from the design with regard to surface engineering aspects, surface treatment like carburizing, nitriding, induction hardening and others require micro structural interpretation through subject quality control methods.

Normal practice is to place a sample test bar that has undergone same manufacturing process that would be later on used for carrying the prescribed tests to ensure quality after heat treatment. Nevertheless, In-Situ Metallography, On line Ultrasonic and Magnetic Particle Testing are getting more popular. Even more sophisticated tests like residual stress measurement are demanded for certain critical components after heat treatment. Good database created based on the various test results will act as useful guide to solve any problem which may crop up from time to time. Nowadays, heat treatment shop requires hardness testing machine, metallographic facilities, softwares like image analyzer, micro-hardness testers and NDT facilities like UT and MP Testing equipments.

Mr. Paresh Haribhakti, MD, TCR Advanced spoke on Root cause Failure Investigation and Remaining life assessment of Reformer tubes at MICMEP-EAC 2009 which was held on Dec 6 at the C C Mehta Auditorium, M S University, Baroda.

The Failure Analysis Team at TCR is jointly headed by Mr. Virendra Bafna (MD, TCR Engineering) and Mr. Paresh Haribhakti (MD, TCR Advanced Engineering). The TCR Advisory Board is often consulted on failure analysis projects.

Mr. Paresh Haribhakti is a B.E. (Metallurgy) M.E. (Materials Technology) from M.S. University, Vadodara. Mr. Haribhakti has done basic research in study of hydrogen embrittlement of steels and stainless steels. Mr. Haribhakti previously worked as trouble shooting metallurgist for India's largest fertilizers and petrochemicals complex, GSFC Ltd., Vadodara for nearly 10 years. His areas of interest are microstructure degradation of components exposed to high temperature and high pressure. He has working experience of more than 250 failure investigation cases of power plants, fertilizers, chemicals and petrochemicals industries. He has solved materials engineering problems and performed failure analysis on components from petrochemical plants, oil and gas transmission pipelines, offshore structures, ships, pharmaceutical plants, food processing equipment, gas turbine engine components, and weldments. Mr. Haribhakti investigates the available physical evidence, and performs the necessary tests to develop the most probable accident scenario. He simplifies complex engineering theory into easy to understand and useable concepts. He uses simple analogies, every day examples, and laymen terms to explain data and findings so clients, corporate executives, government officials, or attorneys may easily understand engineering concepts.

TCR's failure analysis strength is in evaluating high temperature and high pressure failures. The Failure Analysis Team at TCR Engineering has experience in the materials, failure analysis, metallurgical, welding, quality assurance, and forensic engineering fields and is conducted by engineers holding advanced degrees in metallurgy, and mechanical, civil, chemical, and electrical engineering.

TCR Engineering works with our clients to plan the failure analysis before conducting the investigation. A large amount of time and effort is spent carefully considering the background of failure and studying the general features before the actual investigation begins.

In the course of the various steps listed below preliminary conclusions are often formulated. If the probable fundamental cause of the metallurgical failure becomes evident early on in the examination, the rest of the investigation focuses on confirming the probable cause and eliminating other possibilities. The metallurgical failure analyst compiles the results of preliminary conclusions carefully considering all aspects of the failure including visual examination of a fracture surface, the inspection of a single metallographic specimen, and the history of similar failures.

Procedure to conduct a Failure Analysis
Cause of failure is determined using state-of-the-art analytical and mechanical procedures and often includes simulated service testing. A combination of analysis and physical testing locates problems and provides recommendations for solutions.

Our initial step to perform failure analysis begins with visually studying the failed part and asking detailed questions regarding associated parts, plant environment and operational procedure. A complete evaluation sequence of the failure investigation steps are summarized as under:
•Collection of background data and selection of samples
•On-site evaluation and consulting services and Preliminary examination of the failed part
•Complete metallurgical analysis of failed material
•A thorough examination of the failed part including Macroscopic and Microscopic examination and analysis (electron microscopy may be necessary)
•If necessary tests also include Weld Examination, Case Depth, Decarburization Measurement, Coating/Plating Evaluation, Surface Evaluation and/ or Grain Size Determination
•Chemical analysis (bulk, local, surface corrosion products, deposits or coating and microprobe analysis)
•If necessary Tests to simulate environmental and physical stress that may have played a role in the failure
•Analysis of all the evidence. Formulation of conclusions and writing the report (Including recommendations).

TCR has been selected by L&T to undertake complete material testing for the Wankhede Stadium project.

A new and improved Wankhede Stadium is being constructed just in time for the 2011 cricet world cup final and the place will now have colourful bucket seats and more facilities for spectators. In March 2011, cricket lovers will throng to the Wankhede to witness the finale. The new structure will have a capacity of 39,000 spectators as compared to the earlier 35,000. The main aim is to give every spectator a clear view of the match, apart from comfort and world-class facilities. It is being designed and built in such a way that everyone can see the ball crossing the boundary line from any corner of the ground. One of the highlights of the stadium is the suspended cantilever roofs. The Teflon fabric roof is lighter in weight and is also heat resistant. There will be no beam support for the roof so the spectators will have a better view. On the roof there will be exhaust fans to suck the hot air from the stands and allow the breeze from the West to flow in. The stadium will have 20 elevators for North and South stands. There will be ramps for physically challenged people. The stadium have good toilets and spacious snack bars and a better drainage system. Water soaking will become much faster because of ejecto pumps. The men piloting the project are confident work will be over well before the December 2010 deadline.

TCR Arabia has now started an independent materials testing laboratory providing mechanical testing, chemical analysis, corrosion studies and in-depth failure investigations. As a subcontractor to VKE Plumbing, TCR Engineering Services on Saturday August 22, 2009 conducted Radiography examination at the site of India's most expensive home.

Mukesh Ambani’s Residential Project - Antillia is located at Altamount Road, opposite Washington House, Mumbai 400 026.

Mukesh Ambani's new residence being constructed is a 27-storey glass-fronted building and will have parking for 168 cars, three helipads, a theatre and 600 staffers for its upkeep. Mukesh Ambani's new residence being constructed in Mumbai's Altamount Road is the stuff myths are made of. Named after the mythical island Antilia, the house-in-the-making will be completed by next year. It is being built on a 4,532 sq meter plot that was acquired by Ambani in 2002.

According to the plan, the house will rise to a height of 173.12 meters, equivalent to that of a regular 60-storeyed residential building . However, Antilia will have only 27 storeys in all. The first six floors will be reserved for parking alone, and that too for cars belonging only to Mukesh's family. Space for a total of 168 imported cars has been earmarked here.

The eighth floor will have an entertainment centre comprising a mini-theatre. The rooftop of the mini-theatre will serve as a garden, and immediately above that, three more balconies with terrace gardens.

While the ninth floor will have a 'refuge' floor - meant to be used for rescue in emergencies - two floors above that will be set aside for health. It will have facilities for athletics and a swimming pool, while the other will have a health club.

There will be a two-storeyed glass-fronted apartment for the Ambani family's guests above the health floors.

The four floors at the top, that will provide a view of the Arabian Sea and a superb view of the city's skyline, will be for Mukesh, his wife Neeta, their three kids and Mukesh's mother Kokilaben.

Two floors above the family's residence will be set aside as maintenance areas, and on top of that will be an 'air space floor,' which will act as a control room for helicopters landing on the helipad above. There will be three helipads there.

India is the world’s fifth largest consumer of energy, and its demand for petroleum products is growing by more than 6% a year. Foreign companies are welcomed as both investors and suppliers. With nearly $250 billion of investment required in the major segments of the Indian oil and gas industry, the government has opened up the sector to foreign investment, allowing 100% foreign ownership and encouraging joint ventures for exploration. The government has introduced NELP for opening up acreage for exploration, which has encouraged the participation of international operators and service companies in the Indian market which is in its 8th round. Last year saw 170 exploratory wells being drilled and 264 developmental wells being drilled - a significant number of these wells are offshore wells and technology challenges lie in even deeper waters and marginal field development.

RLA/Remaining Life Assessment by TCR in India and Middle-East (KSA, Kuwait, Qatar and UAE)

TCR undertakes comprehensive RLA activities all over the world.

Remaining life assessment concept is based on the philosophy of assessment of present materials integrity vis-à-vis operational demands. The design of material is done on the basis of mechanical properties of the virgin material. Due to continuous use under high pressure and temperature materials properties degrades and it effective life is being consumed. The other degradation process is creep of the material which occurs under high temperature and high pressure normally above 300 Deg C temperature. In general the power plants are designed for 30 years of the creep life.

Thermal and creep degradation of material can be identified with the help of microstructure examination as they are visible under microstructure examination and also can be categorized under different stages hence useful to estimate Remaining life. That's why replica metallography is gaining lot of attention in the Remaining life assessments. The other degradation mechanisms are fatigue and delayed cracking of the weld due to fabrication related defects which they open up after several years of service. They can be triggered by any manufacture flaw, fabrication flaw or during abnormal operations. That is the reason thorough NDT assessments are done to find out presence of any defect which can be found out and repair.

There are two kinds of damages which are observed during operation of high temperate and pressure components. Bulk damage- irreversible damage and other is localized damage which can be repaired. Creep is an irreversible and onset of creep if it is in final stage the component needs to be retired from the plant otherwise it can lead to catastrophic failure. However in case of localized damages like cracking in the weld or flange or bend, which can be replaced or repaired depending upon the nature of the problem. In either case the plant is benefited.

In RLA one can defined the next interval period and maximum life before the next inspection can be predicted is for 5 years for power plants. By adopting this approach every five years or at predefined intervals one get assure about the conditions of the plant and its components. In case of any localized problem is observed it can be rectified and overall integrity of the system can be improved. RLA studies give great benefit to operating plants as they can plan their inventory and components spares which are not fit to withstand up to next shutdown can be replaced as they get uninterrupted service. By adopting this philosophy advanced countries have extracted the life of a power plant or process plant to double or 1.5 times the original design life by running it on calculated risk and assessments.

Even after RLA if any upset in process parameters occurs, failure do occur but in that case reasons of failures are known.
